Gary Antuanne Russell escaped with a decision over Andy Hiraoka, but the brutal second half ruined any appetite for a unification match with Shakur Stevenson. Once Hiraoka began drilling heavy artillery into the midsection, Russell abandoned all offense. The champion went straight into panic mode, clinching desperately and running along the ropes to survive the punishment.
Russell retained his belt by unanimous decision. He also showed how much work it takes him to keep a determined opponent from dictating the pace.
BandNboxing raised the question on X: did that night make Russell think twice about Shakur? It is easy to turn a difficult title defense into an accusation of fear. Russell fought Hiraoka and won. Still, the body attack gave viewers a reason to wonder what happens when Russell cannot fight in his preferred bursts.
Hiraoka eventually stopped waiting for those bursts to end. He pressed Russell toward the ropes and went downstairs, making him defend and wrestle for space. Russell got through it, but he looked far less comfortable when he had to manage sustained pressure than when he could plant his feet and let his hands go.
Shakur would present a different kind of exhaustion. He is unlikely to stand in front of Russell and trade body shots with him. He can jab, step out of range and make Russell start his attack again. Russell’s power is a threat only when he gets close enough to land it. If he spends too much of each round searching for that position, a few explosive moments may not be enough to win the rounds.
That is the career calculation behind this fight. Russell worked years to become a champion and came through a hard defense against Hiraoka. Stevenson has publicly called for a unification, and an offer to Russell’s side has been reported.
The existence of an offer does not establish that Russell personally rejected agreed terms.
Russell once spoke about seeking unification after beating Hiraoka. Now he has a specific question to answer before taking one: how does he make Shakur fight at his pace? Hiraoka could not take Russell’s title, but he made that question much harder to ignore.
