LeBron James seriously considered ending his legendary NBA career in New York.
Speaking Monday at Philadelphia 76ers media day, James revealed that he once envisioned playing at Madison Square Garden and eventually finishing his career with the Knicks. The idea, he said, lost its appeal after New York broke its 53-year championship drought by winning the 2026 NBA title.
“I had visions of playing in the Garden and finishing my career in the Garden,” James told ESPN. “One of the best places I’ve ever played.”
James went even further in describing what Madison Square Garden means to him.
“I think it’s the No. 1 arena in the world, as far as for a basketball player,” he said.
But once the Knicks won the championship, James said joining them no longer felt realistic.
“After they beat San Antonio, I was like, ‘Hey, I can’t.’ I couldn’t do it.”
His reasoning was simple: joining the defending champions at age 41 would have created an enormous amount of criticism and scrutiny. James acknowledged that reaction directly, telling reporters,
“Y’all wouldn’t have let me lay that down, at all.”
The revelation adds another fascinating layer to James’ final free-agency decision.
His choice ultimately came down to five teams: Philadelphia, Cleveland, Golden State, Miami and Minnesota. He eventually signed a two-year deal with the 76ers, beginning what is expected to be the final chapter of his career alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.
The Knicks, however, had been more than a passing thought.
James’ agent Rich Paul had already said earlier this summer that New York would have been the destination had the Knicks not won the title. According to Paul, there would have been little reason to consider the rest of the market if New York had still been chasing its first championship since 1973.
James also made clear that his decision not to join the Knicks had nothing to do with a lack of respect for the team.
“Much respect to the Knicks, obviously,” he said. “An unbelievable team, unbelievable players. Shout out Jalen Brunson. I love that guy, he’s unbelievable.”
Instead, New York’s success changed the story.
James has spent much of his career entering situations where he was expected to help build or restore a championship contender. Joining a Knicks team that had just reached the summit would have created a very different narrative.
So the vision of LeBron James finishing his career under the lights of Madison Square Garden never became reality.
Instead, his first game as a 76er will come there on opening night, when Philadelphia visits the defending champion Knicks and New York raises its championship banner. The Garden may not become James’ final home court after all. But fittingly, it will still play a major role in the beginning of his last chapter.
