Matthew Lillard recently shared an update on the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 in an exclusive interview with Bloody Disgusting. The actor confirmed that filming for the threequel is set to begin in 2027. He also expressed enthusiasm about the early version of the script.
“I know the early version of the script came through and everyone’s really excited about it,” Lillard said. “And I know they’re moving to the next level, so we will be shooting in 2027.” The film does not yet have an official release date. However, if production begins early in the year, a 2027 debut remains possible.
The sequel has seen some creative changes behind the scenes. A June 2026 report revealed that Gary Dauberman signed on to write the screenplay. Dauberman penned IT, The Nun, Salem’s Lot, and Until Dawn. He replaces series creator Scott Cawthon, who wrote the first two films. Director Emma Tammi is also set to return for the third installment.
Lillard and co-star Skeet Ulrich have both teased their returns for the project. However, neither the studio nor the filmmakers have confirmed whether Josh Hutcherson, Piper Rubio, or Elizabeth Lail will reprise their roles.
The franchise has performed strongly at the box office despite mixed critical reception. The first film earned $297.2 million worldwide after its 2023 release. Its sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, followed in 2025 and grossed $239.6 million globally. Dauberman’s involvement has raised expectations that the third entry could resonate more with audiences.
