David Fincher has decided not to renew his exclusive deal with Netflix, Bloomberg reported on September 29. The filmmaker signed the contract in 2020 and has since directed three films for the streamer. His current agreement expires next year, so both sides could still reach new terms.
Fincher’s Netflix filmography includes Mank, The Killer, and the upcoming The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, starring Brad Pitt. Neither Mank nor The Killer received a wide theatrical release or a Blu-ray edition. Mank arrived during the pandemic, while The Killer had only a brief awards-qualifying run in cinemas.
The director’s relationship with the streamer stretches back over a decade. He helmed the pilot of House of Cards in 2013, delivering Netflix its first major original hit. He also executive-produced the cult animated anthology series Love, Death & Robots and directed the pilot of the beloved procedural Mindhunter, winning an Emmy for the episode.
However, audience reception to his recent Netflix output has been lukewarm at best. Mank drew limited viewer interest, and The Killer was largely overlooked despite its critical profile. The absence of physical media releases also undercut the kind of long-tail cult following that defined earlier works like Zodiac and Fight Club.
