Aaron Sorkin made a surprising promise to Sony’s chairman before filmingThe Social Reckoningeven began. The writer-director explained why Donald Trump is never named in the Facebook drama and revealed the legal battles that reshaped key scenes.
Aaron Sorkin says the Facebook drama is focused on divisiveness rather than red-blue politics
Aaron Sorkin revealed that The Social Reckoning deliberately avoids naming Donald Trump, telling Vanity Fair the film focuses on Facebook’s role in rising divisiveness rather than partisan politics.
“The movie is about Facebook’s role and the rise of divisiveness, extremism, and hyper-partisanship in the country,” Sorkin said. “It is not a red-blue thing, even though, obviously, it will be felt that way.” He added that no one asked him to omit Trump’s name. Instead, he voluntarily promised Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman that the film would not feature Trump signage or “Make America Great Again” branding.
The film, which opens Oct. 9, serves as a companion piece to 2010’s The Social Network. It follows whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) and reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) as they expose Facebook’s internal operations. Their real-life work led to “The Facebook Files,” a 2021 Wall Street Journal series. The investigation revealed the platform’s harmful effects on teens and its role in spreading misinformation.
Sorkin also addressed the film’s reshoots, which took place after the trailer’s release. He denied they were a response to mixed audience reactions. “We weren’t correcting anything,” he said. Rothman offered the opportunity, and Sorkin used three days to rewrite two scenes and add another. He described the effort as making a good movie better rather than fixing problems.
Sony hired an outside legal firm specifically for this project, leading to notable script changes. One scene originally featured a senior Facebook executive calling Haugen “a bitch.” Lawyers required the line’s removal unless Sorkin could prove an executive actually used that word.
Additionally, Bill Burr’s character could not be named Roger McNamee directly. The early Facebook investor was on board, but legal concerns about depicting his interactions with Zuckerberg forced the change. The character became “inspired by” McNamee instead.
