Anthony Joshua tickled Tyson Fury during their face-off, and both men laughed. The December 11 fight in Cardiff finally has its two protagonists together, but Wednesday’s London launch suggested the old hostility has become something they perform when prompted.
That leaves the promotion selling a rivalry whose participants appeared perfectly comfortable with each other. The fight still carries competitive interest. The claim that these men cannot stand one another looks harder to sustain.
According to the Standard, the brief dispute over billing followed Max Kellerman asking when some animosity would appear. Fury pointed to his name appearing first. Joshua claimed Fury had threatened to withdraw unless he received that position; Fury denied it.
If the host has to request friction, the resulting argument deserves scrutiny. Billing matters commercially, but a quarrel over the screen behind them offered little evidence of the sporting urgency that once surrounded this matchup.
Fury supplied his knockout threat.
“I tell you what I’m going to do, I’m going to come out and blast him out,” Fury told the press conference, as reported by the Standard. “I’m going to throw down. I’m going to catch him and it’ll be curtains.”
Joshua welcomed it. Fury’s routine produced no obvious discomfort, leaving him without a visible psychological advantage from this encounter. That does not remove his boxing weapons, but it puts greater weight on what he can execute once the talking stops.
Joshua’s preparation provides the sharper subplot. Former Fury trainer Ben Davison will be in his corner, while the Standard reports that Joshua has also consulted Peter Fury. Their experience could help Joshua identify familiar habits and prepare responses. Neither possesses a guaranteed answer to the version of Fury who arrives in Cardiff.
Joshua’s ease also needs to survive a less pleasant setting. If Fury crowds him, clinches and disrupts his rhythm, composure must translate into decisive work rather than patience that lets rounds escape.
The laughter supports criticism of the promotion’s recycled grudge. It cannot establish that either fighter has lost his hunger. For that verdict, they still have to fight.
