G.I. Joe fans can’t stop talking. Bradley Cooper steps into the role of Duke for Paramount’s upcoming film, with Danny McBride directing. The new project will offer a fresh take on the popular Hasbro property.
According to Deadline, Cooper will portray the character previously played by Channing Tatum in the live-action franchise in 2009. Fans have since shared their reactions to the casting on social media.
@_KhanRiddle welcomed the change while also questioning the direction of the new movie. They wrote, “I mean, I guess it’s better than Channing Tatum, but I’m curious if they are rebooting it, what route are they taking?”
Another fan, @kanchana243, was more direct about Cooper’s casting, saying, “He will be the perfect fit for the role.” @screennerdspod wrote, “Bradley Cooper as Duke, I can see it.”
McBride’s involvement has also increased the excitement around the project. @BaxtertheMuse wrote, “Bradley Cooper as Duke with Danny McBride directing? G.I. Joe just jumped to my most anticipated movie.”
What else do we know about the new G.I. Joe movie with Bradley Cooper?
The film will follow Duke and other G.I. Joe team members. The story will reportedly take place in Springfield, a location featured in the franchise’s mythology. The town is secretly under Cobra’s control.
On the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, McBride revealed that he had completed the screenplay for the project. He is co-writing the film with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. The three previously collaborated on The Righteous Gemstones. The director has also described the project as a suspense and action film.
The project is also separate from the G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover that was previously in development. Instead, McBride’s film will tell its own story within the G.I. Joe franchise. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Zev Foreman are producing the film.
Paramount has not revealed further plot details, additional cast members, or a release date yet. More details are expected to emerge as the project develops.
