Released in 1999 and directed by Stephen Sommers, The Mummy follows librarian Evelyn Carnahan as she joins adventurer Rick O’Connell on an expedition to the ancient city of Hamunaptra. Sommers followed the film with The Mummy Returns, which reached theaters on May 4, 2001. Set several years after the events of the first movie, the sequel finds Rick and Evelyn settled in London with their eight-year-old son, Alex. Their family is drawn into another supernatural conflict when Imhotep is resurrected once again in a plot involving an ancient warrior known as the Scorpion King. The sequel earned a 46 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 143 reviews, along with a 63 percent audience rating.
Both the films star Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan. Other cast members include John Hannah as Jonathan Carnahan and Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep, among others. Fraser and Hannah both returned for a third film, though Weisz and Vosloo did not. The franchise is now set to continue with The Mummy 4, which is currently in production. The untitled sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 15, 2027.
