East of Eden tops Netflix charts after earning a high Rotten Tomatoes score
Netflix’s East of Eden climbed to the No. 1 spot on the platform’s U.S. TV charts on October 4, 2026, according to FlixPatrol. The limited series stars Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames and holds an 89% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. It overtook The Great British Bake Off, which had held the top position the previous day.
The show’s debut score marks Pugh’s third-highest-rated TV series on the review aggregator. Her 2018 spy miniseries The Little Drummer Girl leads at 95%, followed by Marvel’s 2021 series Hawkeye at 92%. The 89% rating also represents career-high TV scores for co-stars Mike Faist and Joe Anders.
Pugh spoke about her portrayal of Cathy Ames at the show’s recent premiere. She addressed the complexity of the character beyond surface-level readings. “I think truly through Zoe’s scripts and the understanding that we wanted to dig deeper, and we wanted to go back and understand the context of why she is the way that she is, and once you open one door to feeling sympathy for someone, the rest really open for themselves,” Pugh said.
The actress further elaborated on Ames’ duality as a character. “You know, she’s a woman that has a lot of awful things happen to her. Yes, of course, she does a lot of awful things to other people, but she can be both,” she added. Director Zoe Kazan’s scripts helped explore the character’s deeper motivations.
The series adapts John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel of the same name. Its cast also includes Christopher Abbott, Ciarán Hinds, Hoon Lee, Martha Plimpton, Joseph Zada, and Tracy Letts. East of Eden is now streaming globally on Netflix.
