Karl-Anthony Towns wants to stay with the New York Knicks, but he is making it clear that the two sides are nowhere close to an agreement on a new contract.
Speaking about the ongoing negotiations, Towns said he is willing to structure a deal in a way that helps New York preserve the roster around him, but only if the organization also gives him a contract he believes reflects his value.
“Simply put – I want to do something to keep the team together and can work with the Knicks and also values me,” Towns said. “And none of those things are close to happening.”
The financial gap explains much of the frustration.
According to Stefan Bondy, the Knicks have discussed an extension worth roughly $200 million, while Towns is eligible for a deal in the neighborhood of four years and $276 million. That leaves a difference of more than $70 million between New York’s reported offer and the maximum available to him.
Towns has indicated that he is prepared to accept less than the absolute maximum if doing so helps keep the Knicks’ championship core intact. What he does not appear willing to accept is a discount he considers excessive.
When asked whether he expected an extension to be relatively straightforward after helping New York win a championship, Towns gave a characteristically blunt response.
“No shit, Sherlock.”
The comment captured the tone surrounding negotiations that have become considerably more uncomfortable than Towns apparently expected. New York is attempting to balance rewarding one of its most important players with the financial restrictions created by the NBA’s second tax apron and future commitments elsewhere on the roster. Owner James Dolan has reportedly made avoiding the second apron a priority.
Towns is not facing immediate free agency. He is under contract for this season and holds a player option for 2027-28, giving both sides additional time if they cannot reach an extension now.
But the bigger issue may be how the negotiations affect the relationship.
Towns is publicly saying he wants to remain in New York and is even willing to sacrifice financially to help preserve the team. At the same time, he believes there is a point at which taking less stops being about roster flexibility and starts feeling like the organization does not value him appropriately.
After everything the Knicks accomplished with Towns at the center of their frontcourt, the disagreement has created an unexpectedly tense storyline entering their title defense. For now, Towns wants to stay. The question is whether the Knicks are willing to pay enough to make him feel the same way about staying.
