Meta’s platforms have become an abominable cesspit of AI slop, ranging from violent child abuse to ultra-patriotic engagement bait.

We could go on and on about Meta’s dismal failure to moderate its platforms. More telling is where it does focus its efforts: the company apparently has set its sights on the LGBTQ community after censoring the accounts of two gay bars in Austin, Texas. Both of the Instagram and Facebook accounts of the bars, Oilcan Harry’s and Rain on 4th, were flagged and censored. As Chron reports, pictures of drag queen performers were being marked as “inappropriate,” with the company threatening that similar posts would reduce the bars’ “visibility.”

Rain on 4th president Scott Neal told Chron that Meta had issued no explanation for why the Instagram account for the spot was taken down in early August.

“You feel helpless, you feel like you are stuck in an unfair system that you do not know how to get out of,” Neal said.

The news highlights glaring failures of moderation across Meta’s vast social media platforms. The Mark Zuckerberg-led company announced last year that it was replacing human content moderators with AI, a move that clearly hasn’t paid off, given the sorry state of its slop and hate speech-filled platforms.

It also underlines a paradigm shift in Silicon Valley towards the right, with tech executives kowtowing to an administration that’s taken explicit aim at the LGBTQ community by repealing laws and undermining their rights. GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, found in its annual report last year that Meta had undergone a “particularly extreme”ideological shiftsince 2024, disproportionately suppressing LGBTQ users and content.

In January 2025 — right after president Donald Trump assumed office for the second time — Meta officially dropped hate speech rules designed to protect members of the LGBTQ community, leaving them even more exposed.

That shift appears to be having some very real repercussions. After setting up an alternative account, the original profile for Rain on 4th was suddenly reactivated — only for the new page to be shut down. It’s the kind of senseless chaos that could seriously impact small businesses and their ability to “stay in business in the long term,” as Neal told Chron.

It’s part of a much broader trend, with queer nightclubs disappearing on both Facebook and Instagram. Just last month, the Los Angeles Times reported that several fixtures on the queer nightlife scene in the city had their social media accounts taken down, leading to months of confusion among managers and no meaningful response from Meta.

The constant confusion suggests the tech giant’s efforts to rely on AI to police its platforms isn’t paying off. The company’s problematic content policy shifts are putting the LGBTQ community at risk, further damaging its tarnished reputation.

“It is a very threatening feeling to have a huge giant corporation that controls the vast majority of communication in our society, to have them tell you you are no longer allowed to participate in any dialogue with your customers or the community that you serve,” Neal told Chron.

“That’s in essence a feeling of being silenced,” he added.
