Tyson Fury expects to stop Anthony Joshua early by making him fight at a pace he cannot maintain. He claims Anthony needs several rounds to recover after trading punches and believes Joshua’s muscular build would work against him if he keeps the pressure on.
Fury is trusting his own ability to recover when hurt, but that approach would give Joshua chances to land. Pushing for a stoppage means getting close enough for Anthony to test whether Fury can still take the punishment he believes he can handle.
“He can fight, and he can get up off the floor, but then he needs to take rounds off,” Fury said to The Ring. “He doesn’t have the engine or the gas tank that I have, and it’s mainly due to the muscle size he has on him. When they go, they go. There’s no recovering. It takes three or four rounds. If he fights with me for one minute, he’ll take two rounds off, and that unfortunately ain’t going to be good enough for him.”
Fury believes he can beat Joshua by refusing to give him breathing room after a hard spell of action. Even if Anthony stays upright, Fury expects fatigue to leave him vulnerable to the next attack.
That would put pressure on Joshua to control the pace. He could use his jab, hold when necessary, and make Fury work to reach him. Fury’s plan becomes harder if Anthony can make him pay for coming forward instead of allowing him to dictate when they trade.
There is also a risk in Fury relying too heavily on his ability to get off the floor. Recovering from a knockdown still means he has been caught, and Joshua would have a chance to follow up before Tyson gets his legs back. Fury could create the opening for an early finish and find himself on the receiving end.
His claim that the ending depends on what he chooses to do gives Joshua little credit. Fury can decide to attack, but Anthony’s punches will help determine how long he can afford to keep doing it.
