Ted Lasso Season 5just got some good news and some bad news after theSeason 4 finale. Co-creatorBrendan Hunt addressed the show’srenewal statusand what the finale’s biggest shakeups mean for the future.
Ted Lasso Season 5 is yet to be renewed
Apple TV has not officially renewed Ted Lasso for a fifth season. Co-creator Brendan Hunt confirmed as much in an interview with Deadline. He stated that neither a writers’ room nor a full season order has been greenlit.
“That’s news to me. I certainly hope it happens, and I’m optimistic, but yeah, haven’t heard anything official yet,” Hunt told the outlet. Sources suggest a renewal could be imminent. However, Hunt clarified that a writers’ room will only start after a formal green light.
“As happened for Season 2, they can greenlight a room before they greenlight a season if they want, but neither has happened,” he added. This means a potential Season 5 could still be a long way off.
Despite the uncertainty, the Season 4 finale clearly set the stage for another season. Alice Chilton now leads the women’s team as head coach. Ted and Coach Beard stepped down to serve as her assistants. Roy Kent also departed AFC Richmond to manage Chelsea.
Hunt acknowledged that Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple are busy with other projects. He said the finale gave the show “wiggle room” regarding their future involvement. “There’s no expectation of losing Roy and Keeley. But they are two very busy people,” Hunt explained.
The finale also featured a deliberate “passing of the torch” from the men’s team to the women’s squad. Hunt said the cameos by most original players in the finale may have been their last. “We’ve been very judicious with how much we see of the players this first season,” he explained. He added that the show has taken “the long view from the beginning” with the new cast.
For now, the show’s future remains in Apple TV’s hands without any confirmed timeline.
