The opening scene of the new Midnight Fantastic Four comic continues an odd cinematic trend. Usually, this would not be surprising given how the movies often inspire changes to the comics. In this case, however, the trend comes from the Fantastic Four films set outside the MCU.

Written by Benjamin Percy, with art by Kev Walker, Midnight Fantastic Four #1 opens with Reed Richards in disgrace. While known to be a scientific visionary, this Richards is also a drug addict who has neglected his teaching duties. This leads to his firing from the New York Institute of Technology, with his equipment and research seized in the process.
Despite this, Richards attempts to break into the lab to attempt one final test of his dimensional gateway. He is greeted by his research assistant, Victor, who saw this turn of events coming. Despite Richards trying to send him away, Victor refuses to abandon him on when they are so close to a breakthrough.

Unfortunately, the experiment fails and Victor is reduced into a living puddle of protoplasm. Richards is jailed for his actions, until he is later released into the custody of tech magnate Sue Storm. This begins a dark new origin for this Fantastic Four. However, it also bares a striking similarity to earlier movies based on Marvel’s First Family.
Midnight Fantastic Four ties Doctor Doom to Reed Richards’ experiments
Curiously, all the Fantastic Four film adaptations before the MCU’s First Steps changed the origins of Doctor Doom. In the comics, Doom blamed Reed Richards for interfering with the experiment that left him scarred and saw him expelled. The movies, however, all tie Doom’s origins to one of Reed Richards’ failed experiments.

Midnight Fantastic Four #1 most strongly resembles the events of the 1994 Roger Corman movie that was never officially released. There, Reed Richards and Victor Von Doom were friends during college, who attempted to study the unique energies of a passing comet together. The experiment apparently ended in Victor’s death, though he survived to seek revenge on Richards.
2005’s Fantastic Four movie tied Victor Von Doom directly to the origins of his arch-enemies. He was part of the same experiment in space that empowered the Four, gaining electric powers and metal skin. The same thing happened in 2015’s Fant4stic, though this Doom was a computer technician as opposed to a science mogul.

But despite this similarity, Midnight Fantastic Four does introduce one notable twist that breaks the chain. Namely, that the Victor who assisted Reed Richards is not the Victor Von Doom Marvel fans are familiar with. The comic later shows this Victor being questioned by a familiar masked figure in a castle in Latveria. Yet the opening scene seems to be a nod to the infamous Fantastic Four movie Roger Corman never intended to release.
