Anthony Cacace will defend his WBA super featherweight title against former featherweight champion Nick Ball on December 19 in Belfast, Queensberry Promotions has confirmed. The fight gives Ball an opportunity to become a two-division champion in his first appearance at 130 pounds.
Ball returns after losing his WBA featherweight title to Brandon Figueroa by a 12th-round stoppage last February. Rather than seeking another championship opportunity at 126, he moves up four pounds to challenge Cacace.
The move introduces a few questions about how Ball will perform at the higher weight. His success at featherweight came through sustained pressure, strength at close range and a willingness to keep working through exchanges. Against Cacace, he will need to establish that approach against a naturally bigger opponent.
Having additional room on the scales could benefit Ball, although a fight at 130 would have provided a clearer indication before stepping into a title challenge. He enters this contest without that preparation, making his adjustment to the division part of the story on December 19.
Cacace has the opportunity to defend in Belfast against an experienced challenger who has already competed at championship level. Ball’s featherweight title experience gives him a foundation for the occasion, even if the weight and opponent present a different test.
Ball’s pressure could make this an interesting tactical matchup. He will want to close the distance and prevent Cacace from settling into a rhythm. Cacace, meanwhile, can make the challenger work on his way inside, where Ball will have to judge when to attack and when to avoid unnecessary exchanges.
The Figueroa defeat also makes Ball’s return worth watching. A late stoppage after a demanding fight leaves questions that time away alone cannot answer. His ability to sustain his usual pace against Cacace will provide a better measure of where he is.
For Ball, victory would turn a difficult year into a successful move to a second division. Cacace will be looking to keep his championship and deny the former featherweight titleholder an immediate return to the top.
