John Cena has broken his silence on the long wait for more Peacemaker, and his explanation comes down to simple math: DC has bigger names to serve first. The actor opened up about the character’s future during a recent chat on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he also discussed his new film and his wrestling past.
John Cena understands why Peacemaker isn’t a priority at DC
Speaking with host Josh Horowitz, Cena made it clear he holds no grudge over the delay. Asked whether fans had seen the last of Peacemaker, he replied, “You need a different guy on this chair.” He confirmed he has not worn the helmet since the character’s last appearance.
Even so, Cena said he told James Gunn he would suit up whenever needed. “I will put this helmet on as long as you need me to,” he said, praising Gunn’s creative environment and calling him a director who makes him better.
Cena also framed the situation through Gunn’s own journey. Gunn climbed a steep hill with Guardians, got invited to DC, worked with one crew on The Suicide Squad, and then wrote Peacemaker out of boredom.
Now, Cena said, Gunn plays with a “whole box of toys.” He continued, “And because you get the whole box of toys, you have to address the really valuable ones first.” He named Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as the obvious priorities. “I’d be making those plays first. So, that’s okay.”
On whether the Peacemaker’s story feels unfinished, John Cena said that feeling never fades. He compared it to fans asking him to return to wrestling after retirement. To him, such requests signal that the work landed.
“Nobody’s saying good f—— riddance, Peacemaker,” he said, adding that he has heard far more support than rejection. He accepts he cannot control the “what if we,” and he hopes his run opens other doors—like Matchbox, which he calls “okay, let’s go.”
Season 2 of Peacemaker ended with “Full Nelson,” written and directed by Gunn, which aired on HBO Max on October 9, 2025. The finale got mixed reviews, with praise for performances and emotional moments while dividing critics over its cliffhanger and slow pacing. Cena stays busy regardless. Matchbox: The Movie, directed by Sam Hargrave, hits Apple TV on October 9, 2026, with Cena starring alongside Jessica Biel.
