Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z Street Fighter has unveiled a unique creative vision that fans are talking about. The highly anticipated action movie promises something special, depicting Ryu and Ken’s backstory.
Street Fighter has released an exclusive first look at the 2D animated sequences featuring Ken Masters and Ryu. Although the movie is live-action, with Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji portraying the iconic leads, the 2D animated scenes will tell their backstory.
Fans’ reactions to the special animated sequences have been overwhelming, with many praising the creative choice.
One fan on X, @Fredilo_, says, “This is such a great idea. Will probably end up being the best part of the movie too.” Meanwhile, @baudelaireflop writes, “Yeah, you can tell a lot of love is being given to this movie. I really hope it delivers.”
The latest footage offers a closer look at the movie’s creative direction
Street Fighter’s latest promotional video takes viewers behind the scenes, offering a glimpse into how the 2D sequences were made. The clip opens with a shot of Centineo and Koji in an intense standoff as Ken and Ryu, respectively. Director Kitao Sakurai then sheds light on the animated shots for the characters’ backstories.
“A unique aspect to Street Fighter, the movie, is all of our flashback sequences, where we see Ken and Ryu growing up and their past,” Sakurai explained. “Those are all told through traditional hand-drawn ‘90s-style animation.”
Sakurai also cited his influences, drawing from his childhood spent between Japan and America. The filmmaker explained that the movie is “a bridge between Japanese culture and American culture.”
Sakurai said the animation style is an homage to the anime he grew up watching, including Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Dragon Ball Z. “It was important to work with an animation team that honored that lineage of animation storytelling.”
The director concluded, “I just love the animated sequences so much. There’s just this really special magical feeling while also respecting the video game.”
Street Fighter arrives in theaters on October 16, 2026.
