The Oklahoma City Thunder have made another major commitment to their young core, agreeing with Cason Wallace on a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale extension that will keep the guard under contract through the 2031-32 season.
The deal comes just before the extension deadline and gives Oklahoma City long-term control of one of the league’s best young perimeter defenders. Wallace, 22, is coming off a season in which he averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 35.6% from three. He also earned Second Team All-Defense honors and led the NBA in total steals and deflections.
His importance to the Thunder has only grown after a summer of roster changes. Oklahoma City moved on from Lu Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, creating a larger role for Wallace and clearing financial room to keep the core intact. Wallace is now expected to start next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the backcourt.
More importantly, the extension completes a remarkable piece of long-term roster construction.
The Thunder now have their projected starting five – Gilgeous-Alexander, Wallace, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein – all signed to multi-year contracts. Alex Caruso is also locked in for three more seasons as one of the team’s most important players off the bench.
For Wallace, the agreement provides security ahead of what would otherwise have been restricted free agency next summer. For Oklahoma City, it removes another major contract question before Wallace enters what could be his biggest role yet.
The former No. 10 overall pick has steadily developed from defensive specialist into an increasingly complete two-way guard. He started 58 of 77 games last season and recorded a league-high 150 steals, establishing himself as a foundational piece rather than merely another young contributor.
Oklahoma City has spent years accumulating draft assets and young talent. Now the franchise is transitioning from building a contender to maintaining one. Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams, Holmgren and Wallace are all still young enough to remain together deep into the decade, while Hartenstein and Caruso provide experienced pieces around them.
Dynasties cannot be guaranteed by contracts alone. But the Thunder have done one of the hardest parts: identifying their core early and making sure it stays together.
