Kyrie Irving has never been afraid to use his platform to speak out on issues beyond basketball. Now, the Dallas Mavericks superstar has explained why he offered to cover an NFL fine imposed on Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair for honoring a Palestinian child killed in Gaza.

Al-Shaair was fined $11,941 by the NFL after writing the name “Hind Rajab” on his eye black during Houston’s September 13 season opener against the Buffalo Bills. The five-year-old Palestinian girl was killed in January 2024 after the vehicle carrying her and several family members came under fire in Gaza. Her final calls for help drew international attention to the circumstances surrounding her death.

The NFL determined that Al-Shaair’s tribute violated its uniform regulations, which prohibit players from displaying unauthorized personal messages during games.

Irving publicly stepped forward in September, offering to pay the fine himself. Following the Mavericks’ game against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night, the nine-time NBA All-Star was asked about his decision and delivered an emotional explanation.

“It’s a selfless act when you can show up for others that don’t necessarily have a voice for themselves,” Irving said.

The 34-year-old also emphasized his personal connection with Al-Shaair, describing the linebacker as a friend and someone who shares his commitment to raising awareness about humanitarian issues.

Irving went on to address the suffering of civilians, particularly children, in conflicts around the world. He argued that athletes and other public figures have a responsibility to speak up when they believe people are being treated unjustly.

He praised Al-Shaair for accepting the possibility of financial punishment in order to draw attention to someone whose story might otherwise go unnoticed.

“This mission is bigger than just me and Azeez,” Irving explained, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and collective action.

Al-Shaair has continued using his platform to highlight the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Texans linebacker has repeatedly displayed the names of Palestinian children during games and has previously supported relief initiatives through the NFL’s charitable programs.

Irving, meanwhile, has expressed support for Palestinians on numerous occasions, including wearing a Palestinian flag necklace and a shirt highlighting the dangers faced by journalists covering the conflict.

His latest comments came on the same night he made his long-awaited return to NBA action following a lengthy absence caused by a torn ACL, recording 15 points in 24 minutes against Houston.

However, Irving’s postgame remarks demonstrated that his priorities extend well beyond his return to the basketball court.

For the Mavericks guard, supporting Al-Shaair was never simply about covering an $11,941 fine. It was about recognizing another athlete’s willingness to use his visibility to bring attention to innocent lives lost in conflict, even when doing so comes at a personal cost.
