Stupid Never Dies is a fun take on the dungeon crawler concept
I’m not too far through Stupid Never Dies so far, but after playing a few hours of the game, it’s easy to see where the core visual inspiration has come from. GPTRACK50 uses a punk pop art style very similar to some of the works by Goichi Suda (better known as Suda51). If you’ve played games like No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, or Killer Is Dead, you’ll understand what I’m getting at.
Stupid Never Dies makes use of cel-shading with high contrast colours to achieve this art style. It makes everything look like a living comic book, but also features surfaces that have texture to them. In a way, you feel like the world is a real, breathing place, but still retain that timeless, stylised look.
What you’ll actually be doing in Stupid Never Dies is progressing through a series of randomised dungeon encounters, facing off against different enemies and bosses that get progressively tougher. Davy starts off pretty weak, but each crawl allows him to obtain new abilities and get stronger.
This is primarily achieved through a bite mechanic, in which you’re encouraged to reduce enemy health to a certain point before biting them to obtain their powers. You can them summon these powers for yourself, which gives you a better chance at taking on bosses and minibosses without losing too much health.
There’s also a timer mechanic in which Davy only has limited amount of time in each dungeon, which forces you to be speedy through each encounter. The time you’re given can be replenished through certain power-ups you collect, but overall you’ll be punished if you don’t keep moving forward, so this mechanic creates an air of urgency as you progress through each dungeon.
GPTRACK50 is made up of many former Capcom developers, with Stupid Never Dies being the debut title for the studio.
It’s produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi, whose body of work goes back to Devil May Cry and the original Resident Evil games. Meanwhile, other Resident Evil veterans like Eiichiro Sasaki and Koji Kakae are also credited on Stupid Never Dies.
Although it’s not necessarily a “scary” game, we’d put Stupid Never Dies out as a recommendation for you to check out this Halloween if you want to play something that fits with the season.
Stupid Never Dies is out now on PC and PlayStation 5.
