“Ali G: Who Iz I?”

“Ali G: Who Iz I?”

One of the two men seemingly discredited in Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Ali G film has claimed that he was in on the joke the whole time.

Joshua Loudermilk appears in the controversial movie Ali G: Who Iz I? as a recruit of Cohen’s fictional former Mossad counterterrorism expert Colonel Erran Morad, as they attempt to stop the baby of a fictional South American drug kingpin from being born on US soil.

Along with fellow recruit Michael Aboud, the chair of the El Paso county Republican party, he follows Morad on an increasingly bizarre mission that involves abducting a woman apparently in labour, abandoning her in a medical facility and kidnapping her newborn child (a prosthetic) before dropping it from a drone into Mexico at the US border.

Aboud has threatened to sue Cohen, claiming he was misled into appearing in the film after believing it was a documentary about immigration. He also branded Cohen “a pervert” while accusing his production team of deceiving participants for their own benefit.

But Loudermilk, a 54-year-old aspiring actor from North Carolina, has now claimed that he recognised Cohen early in the shoot but continued to pretend to be a hard-right Maga sympathiser.

“I wanted to use this to my benefit,” he told the Guardian. “I would hope Sacha would read this and laugh, like, ‘Hey, you got me!’ I had so much fun creating that character. I was trying to see if I was any good at acting in comedy. And I realised, ‘Oh, I think I’m good at this.’ And that’s what I wanna do for the rest of my life.”

Loudermilk apparently became involved in the film after responding to a post on Craigslist by an organisation called the American Citizen Initiative (the website for which is no longer live) calling for “patriotic legal Americans” who were concerned about the “border crisis”.

He said attendees were offered $300 (£224) along with travel expenses in return for attending “an exclusive, hands-on event experience where you’ll learn the truth about what’s happening on the border and how you can make resistance”.

Loudermilk told the Guardian that his motivation to attend was largely financial, as he had recently been made redundant. He claims to have fabricated hard-right views in his application and mentioned he had been a preacher while omitting his acting aspirations, in part, he said, out of embarrassment.

His suspicions were raised, he said, after passing the initial interview rounds and being introduced to an “Israeli commander” whom he believed looked like Cohen, although he initially dismissed the idea to himself.

However, he and his fellow recruits – “old, old, old white guys who were really out of shape” – were then shown demonstrations of a new top-secret gun in the shape of a large strap-on bottom that fired bullets out of its anus.

When Morad began demonstrating the trigger system, involving the pumping of an attached rubber penis, Loudermilk claimed he realised it was Cohen but decided not to break character and instead “go along with it”.

“I was going to take it another step further,” he said. “He’s not going to punk me; I’m going to trick him. So I decided to get into character and just have a good time because they’re paying me.”

The Independent has contacted Cohen’s representative for comment.

Loudermilk posted to his public Facebook page in December last year – seven months before the film was announced to the public – about shooting “intense improv comedy scenes with Sasha [sic] Cohen” for eight hours: “I had so much fun and looking forward to seeing the movie next year,” he wrote.

In an earlier post that same month, he wrote: “Big announcement, yeah I filmed with a very famous comic and filmmaker a few months back. Due to NDA I can’t say anything till film is released.

“Got to do some insane improve [sic] acting for six hours closely with this actor… so very good chance I will be part of this movie. If so, hoping it is a break I need to get into comedy and get real jobs. Hope to share more when film is done.”

Representatives for the film told the Guardian that Loudermilk was not in on the joke.

The film was released in the UK on Friday (23 October) to mixed reviews. Cohen recently defended reviving the controversial character, some critics of whom consider him to be offensive, stating: “The fact that Ali G is outdated and problematic is the very reason I resurrected him.”
