Dramatic footage shows a police officer firing six shots at a gunman who opened fire in a busy Krakow market square Saturday, killing six people and wounding at least 15 others.
The masked attacker, a 24-year-old Polish citizen who police have yet to name, began randomly firing from a dark vehicle as he sped through the city’s Main Square Saturday afternoon.
A video from the scene shows a police officer approaching the suspect, who is on the ground, and firing six shots at him from a close distance as sirens blare in the background.
The suspect lies wounded as the officer kneels beside him and appears to remove weapons. The man then rolls onto his side and back.
Warning: This video shows a person being shot.
After the shootout, the perp was taken into custody and is currently in hospital, police said.
“Police officers confronted an armed attacker. They did not hesitate, even though they themselves were in mortal danger,” Polska Police wrote on X.
“This is what police service is all about. Courage, responsibility and a willingness to act even when your own life is at stake.”
Unverified footage shared on social media showed scores of people fleeing as gunshots rang out.
One heartbreaking video showed two people lying on the blood-spattered paving stones as bystanders tried to resuscitate them. A third person lay motionless nearby.
The suspect was wearing “military-style” attire and used an AR-15 rifle, police said. Additional weapons and ammunition were found in his car.
“I saw shots being fired from the driver’s side window, and smoke was coming out,” a man who only gave his name only as Konrad and witnessed the shooting, told Polish news outlet Interia.
“I ran to the police station in the main market square, when I burst inside, it was full of people hiding on the floor.”
Four of those killed were women and two were men.
Two police officers were among the wounded — one of them seriously — from the standoff with the suspect.
One officer sustained a bullet wound, while the other is fighting for his life in hospital after receiving three gunshot wounds, and is undergoing surgery.
“Police officers in Krakow intervened, risking their own lives. They acted immediately. Thanks to their heroic conduct, the assailant was quickly apprehended,” Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski wrote on X.
During an evening press conference, Kierwinsky said the perpetrator was “ultra-nationalistic” and had “very, very radical views,” according to Poland’s TVN24. Police said he acted alone.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk offered his “deepest condolences” to the families of the victims and “highest praise for the heroic police officers who risked their lives” in a post on X, as he headed to Krakow.
Police said they started to receive calls around 3 p.m. local time that an assailant had opened fire.
Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, is a popular tourist destination. Social media footage showed traditional horse-drawn carriages passing through the square amid the chaos.
Among those injured are a Portuguese and a Russian national from the information authorities have released so far.
