These comedians aren’t the only things being expelled from their apartment.
A Toronto comedy duo is facing eviction over complaints about indoor smoking — but claim their landlord’s air-quality concern could actually stem from the fact that they “fart too much.”
SE Grummett and Sam Kruger — a couple who performs horror-comedy and interactive “queer theatre” under the name Creepy Boys — said air-quality readings suggest that passed gas, not puffing away, is behind the stink as they battle Ontario’s Landlord and Tenant Board, according to the International Business Times.
“This is not a joke. We wish we were joking,” read a site raising funds for the duo’s legal expenses.
Grummett and Kruger’s landlord, who suffers from a chronic lung condition, gave them the boot after noticing volatile organic compounds detected by an air-quality monitor in her upstairs unit, which shares an air duct with the couple’s apartment, the fundraising site said.
The tenants, who claim they do not smoke inside, said they took every measure to identify the source of the VOCs and found through trial and error that it was not related to appliance use or home fragrances.
A health specialist supposedly verified information from the monitor’s manufacturer that suggested VOC levels react to bodily functions, leading the two to claim the readings — which spike overnight — could be caused by their flatulence and that their landlord’s smoking allegations were full of hot air.
“We are being wrongfully evicted because we fart too much,” read the fundraising efforts, which claims that after the tenants debunked the landlord’s smoking theory, she wrongly tried to evict them so that she could return the unit to a single-family home.
“We are currently being evicted for ‘personal use’ but we believe this is retribution for us enforcing our tenants rights, as well as, our landlords belief that the poor air quality readings in her unit are from us smoking,” the pair wrote.
“We believe this to be in bad faith. In Ontario, such evictions have to be heard by the Landlord Tenant Board. So, we are going to court.”
About $2,400 had been raised for the duo’s legal costs by Sunday morning, a month after the fundraising site was posted.
Creepy Boys did not respond to a Post request for an interview.
