The first reactions to Mortal Kombat II are here—and video game fans should be very happy.
After a special fan screening in Los Angeles on Monday, April 27, members of the press and those in the audience took to social media to share their initial thoughts on the film.
While full reviews from a much larger sampling of critics won’t drop until closer to the movie’s May 8 release date, those in attendance seemed overwhelmingly impressed with what they watched.
What Is ‘Mortal Kombat II’ About?
The second movie finds the good guys from the first film recruiting fan-favorite Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban) to defend Earthrealm in a series of fatal fights.
Per New Line Cinemas, “This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.”
Returning stars include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.
Jumping into the fray for the first time, meanwhile, are Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka.
After voicing Kabal in the first film, Damon Herriman will also appear as Quan Chi.
First Reactions Praise Sequel
The first film was released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously back in 2021, taking in $84.4 million at the box office despite being readily available for those to stream at home. Critics called it a fun popcorn movie with gory fights, though one of the biggest criticisms was the movie’s lack of an actual Mortal Kombat tournament. Many also wondered why the first one centered on Tan’s Cole Young, who was created for the films, while also introducing a new backstory for the fighters’ powers, called an Arcana.
In their first reactions for the sequel, all shared on X, viewers indicated fan complaints were clearly taken into consideration while making the new movie.
“#MortalKombat2 is a stark improvement over the first one in just about every way possible – better fights, cooler costumes, and nastier fatalities,” wrote Comic Book’s Chris Killian. “It’s all still quite campy, but hot damn it’s a gory good time. MK2 is fun as hell and the most faithful #MortalKombatmovie yet.”
Added reporter Brandon Davis: “Mortal Kombat 2 is the movie we should’ve gotten the first time! It feels more confident and comfortable embracing its video game roots to huge benefit. It’s a fun, fast-paced, ridiculous bloodbath with great action. Kitana is the heart of it. Kano is hilarious.”
ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, meanwhile, called the film “SO much fun.”
“Hilarious, wild & gory as hell. Kitana is the heart. Johnny & Kano are comedy gold,” she added. “It is high-octane & packed with a ton of great references. I personally loved the first one, but this one is a level above.”
“MORTAL KOMBAT II feels like an 80s wet dream in the best of ways, mostly thanks to Johnny Cage, and it kinda rips,” posted reporter Rachel Leishman.
Also heaping praise on Cage and Kitana was Bill Bria, who said the sequel is the “movie to best capture to full spirit of the games so far.” Bria added that “the fights are gnarly & emotionally charged,” while saying “Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage is a savvy ode to ‘90s action stars” and “Adeline Rudolph’s Kitana is the coolest heroine in the franchise.”
In his post, Patrick Tomasso called the movie “gory as hell,” with fight scenes that, alone, are “worth the price of admission.”
Digital creator BLURAYANGEL called MKII a “flawless victory of a sequel,” adding that it’s an “immense upgrade ” from the first installment. Reporter Hunter Bolding also called it “one hell of a movie,” saying it “hits the video game styling, crowd-pleasing moments aplenty, satisfying story, it’s all here.”
Big Gold Belt Media also reiterated the “flawless victory” praise, while Smells Like Teen Angst said the movie “amps up the franchise in the best way.” POC Culture, meanwhile, promised that the sequel “delivers the iconic tournament that fans have been waiting for” with “bone-crushing action.”
Other viewers gave the sequel some slight criticism, with The Movie Podcast saying it “pulls its punches when it matters most” while also calling it a “messy ride.” The website, however, also said that, overall, the movie is a “total blast.”
The outlet’s Daniel Baptista also called out the “flawed story” in his own reaction, while still saying the movie “stays true to the spirit of the games and knows exactly what it is.”
Added Polygon’s Jacob Kleinman/Polygon: “I saw MORTAL KOMBAT 2 last night. It’s essentially a 2-hour apology for the 2021 movie. Barely any plot. Fight scenes designed to look like 2D video game battles. Cutscene-level dialogue. Marvel-style quips. Exploding heads. Look, it’s a fun movie but a paper thin one at best.”
Fans can decide how they feel about the film when it hits theaters on May 8.
