SAN FRANCISCO — Draymond Green has declined his nearly $28 million player option for the 2026-27 season and will become a free agent, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
ESPN first reported Green’s decision. The veteran forward averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game last season with the Golden State Warriors while struggling to find offensive consistency. His rebounding numbers were his lowest since 2013-14, and his assist numbers were his lowest since 2014-15. Green’s biggest on-court impact remains on the defensive end, where the 36-year-old is still a force in the right matchups, and he continued to serve as an emotional engine and respected figure within the locker room.
But Green doesn’t provide the same night-to-night impact he once did. The question for Green entering next season is whether he can handle a potentially reduced role if his game continues to decline.
Still, in a season in which a variety of Warriors dealt with injury, Green played 68 games.
“We’ve been hit with more injuries this season than any I’ve ever seen,” Green said after the Warriors’ Play-In Tournament loss to the Phoenix Suns. “It’s not quite the ending you want, but it happens. We whupped on a lot of people for a long time. Once you get whupped on, you can’t put your head down; you’ve got to take the punches and move forward.”
At the time, Green reiterated his desire to remain with Golden State but acknowledged an uncertain future.
“If the question is, ‘Where do I want to be?’” Green said. “I think it’s pretty obvious, guys, where the hell I’m going. If they want me here, I’ll be right here.”
The most memorable moment of Green’s season came two days before Christmas when he left the bench during a game against the Orlando Magic after a heated argument with coach Steve Kerr. Kerr publicly apologized for the exchange the next day, and the pair’s relationship appeared to grow even stronger after the episode.
The One Transition Steve Kerr Is Worried About
Green has said he is proud of what he helped the Warriors build and has been open about wanting to keep the organization in a strong place moving forward.
“We didn’t work this hard so that when we’re coming back to games five, 10 years from now, the team is complete dogs—,” Green told The Athletic last season. “That’s not why we built this thing up. We built this thing up so that this thing can go on for years and years and years and outlive us. And so with that being said, we’re never gonna be guys that go up there, talking to (the front office), telling them like, ‘Hey man, f— that, get rid of …’ Nah, that’s not what it is.”
