SAN FRANCISCO — Kristaps Porziņģis has agreed to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors on a two-year deal, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
The deal is worth $40 million, said a league source who was not permitted to speak publicly because the deal is not yet official. ESPN first reported the move.
The Warriors acquired the 30-year-old Porziņģis from the Atlanta Hawks just before February’s trade deadline in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield. But Porziņģis’ tenure with the Warriors was marked by absences from the lineup and brief glimpses of solid play alongside the Warriors’ veteran core.
Porziņģis averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in his two-and-a-half-month stint with the Warriors. The biggest question for him will be the same one that accompanied his arrival: Will he be available night to night? It’s the question Porziņģis must continue to answer not only for the rest of the NBA, but for himself.
Porziņģis has played in just 122 games over the last three seasons, including just 15 for the Warriors. Porziņģis, who was previously diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), has repeatedly praised Rick Celebrini, the Warriors’ vice president of player health and performance, and his staff for helping him feel comfortable on the floor after dealing with a variety of injury issues.
Porziņģis should pair well alongside Warriors star guard Stephen Curry, but the duo didn’t get much of a chance to play with each other because of their respective injury issues. If Porziņģis can somehow stay on the floor more in his second run with the Warriors, his ability to shoot from the outside and his defensive length would be invaluable.
When Will Steph Curry retire?
When asked by The Athletic in April why he thought he was able to fit into the Warriors’ system so quickly, Porziņģis said that his style of play is suited to play anywhere.
“It’s just the type of player I am,” he said. “I can kind of fit into any system. I think the team realized pretty quickly what I’m capable of in the post and drawing attention and creating for myself and creating for the team.
“But I still feel like I have levels to get to. In terms of shape, in terms of rustiness, and I still — I’m not too happy with how I’m playing right now.”
With a full summer under his belt and more time to grow with Curry and company, both Porziņģis and the Warriors are banking on the idea that the rustiness from the last few years will fade, and he can become a consistent contributor.
