We witnessed a classic in Mexico City, as England became the first team to beat Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in a World Cup match.

The round-of-16 tie had plenty of drama: a red card, two penalties, five goals, and 11 minutes of added time in a 3-2 England triumph, making it a worthy all-nighter for fans back in England.

During the celebrations, a sad note for the England camp was Jordan Henderson, who landed awkwardly after slipping over an advertising board and will be out for the remainder of the tournament as he requires wrist surgery. But that wasn’t the only bizarre thing to happen.

Whether you stayed up to watch or not, here are the more unusual things that added to the allure of one of England’s most famous victories in recent years.

Mexico manager swearing at Gordon and then smiling

There was a nervous energy to the first 30 minutes of the game. Mexico manager Javier Aguirre dealt with it as he knows best — using swear words liberally.

The 67-year-old once justified a red card he got for swearing at an official by saying: “That’s just the way I talk. ‘Hijo de p–a’ (son of a b****) is something I say a dozen times a game.”

A clip is circulating of Aguirre calling England’s Anthony Gordon from the sideline, then jokingly telling him, “F*** you,” before chuckling.

Gordon laughed it off, and there is a much more playful tone here than what we saw between Paraguay’s Juan Caceres and France’s Kylian Mbappe the day prior.

Mind you, this was before Aguirre had anything to actually rant about. Soon after, his team were 2-0 down.

Mexico’s foul kick-off — after Kane penalty

Set pieces have never been more important in the game. Set-piece coaches, like Austin MacPhee of Aston Villa and Portugal, are now well known and Premier League winners Arsenal, well, won the league title largely thanks to their set-piece prowess.

Last season, Paris Saint-Germain caused a stir by booting their kick-offs into their opponents’ half like an NFL team — a tactic players have taken on in this tournament.

Was this another one of those schemes? Or did Mexico’s Brian Gutierrez just forget the rules?

After England’s third goal, Harry Kane’s penalty, Gutierrez tried to restart the game from kick-off by simply dribbling into England’s half.

The International Football Association Board’s (IFAB) rules say play restarts when the ball is kicked and clearly moves, but the player taking the restart must not be the next player to touch it. Referee Alireza Faghani correctly gave a free kick to England.

Kane’s croaky post-match interview

You can’t blame Harry Kane for losing his voice after celebrating with his team-mates and singing Oasis’ Wonderwall with England fans full throttle in celebration.

But no amount of coughing or rubbing his neck saved him from a comical tone of voice in his post-match interview, and “being killed by his mates back home,” as he later told the BBC.

“We had to fight,” Kane said in several tones and octaves during the interview. “I’ve just been singing there. I can’t really talk.”

It was Liam Gallagher-approved. The Oasis singer posted on X: “It’s hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL.”

Kane and Peter Crouch’s jubilant celebrations

It was clearly a meaningful win for the England team and captain Kane. After already losing his voice, Kane was captured in an emotional embrace with former Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Peter Crouch.

Crouch could not have looked prouder, telling Kane, “I f***ng love you,” and after this win who doesn’t admire England’s record World Cup scorer?

This was the type of celebration that would have been happening country-wide, despite the match kicking off at 2am in the UK after the hour delay. The BBC’s close-up of former England goalkeeper Joe Hart shouting, “Yeahhhh,” (22 seconds into this clip) after Kane converted his penalty has also proved meme-worthy.

Kane was not the only player to feel the magnitude of defeating Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Declan Rice said post-match: “That’s the best England result I’ve ever experienced. Probably the best away day I’ve ever had in an England shirt. It was just an incredible night.”

Dan Burn’s overhead-kick block and being too tall for mic

Newcastle United’s Dan Burn played his first minutes in the World Cup — and what an impact he made as substitute, making a joint-game-high six clearances in only 15 minutes. Mexico kept firing crosses towards the 6ft 7in defender. He kept heading them away.

He even put his head to a Raul Jimenez overhead kick attempt (below).

Burn is the tallest outfielder at the tournament now that Bosnia & Herzegovina’s 6ft 7in defender Stjepan Radeljic is no longer competing after his team was eliminated.

FIFA clearly weren’t prepared for a man of his size to take the podium after the match. Burn made a joke of it, ducking down to the microphone and apologising for being too tall.

The defender’s cameo might have earned him more game time to help contain Erling Haaland in the quarter-finals as England face Norway on Saturday.
