A behind-the-scenes update on Spider-Man: Brand New Day has left several Marvel fans confused. The upcoming fourth Spider-Man film in the MCU is set to bring a major tonal shift for the franchise.
Why is the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day update confusing fans?
The official writing credits for Spider-Man: Brand New Day have been published on the Writers Guild of America website. The credits list Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, the duo who penned the previous three MCU Spider-Man films. However, fans are puzzled by the total omission of Justin Kuritzkes’ name, who was previously reported to be getting a writing credit. According to Tom Holland, Kuritzkes, who previously penned Challengers and Queer, played a pivotal role in rewriting the scenes between Peter and MJ in the film.
According to the WGA, Kuritzkes won’t even receive an additional writing credit. The WGA likely left him out because his writing contribution didn’t meet the minimum requirements for a screenwriting credit. Previously, the guild passed on adding Edward Norton to The Incredible Hulk’s writing credits for a similar reason. Adding to the confusion, Kuritzkes was actually credited as a writer in the movie’s official trailer descriptions.
While Brand New Day brings back the same writers as the previous films, the sequel is carving out its own identity under Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction. Fans have already noticed from the trailers that the film is leaning into a much darker, more violent tone, driven by Peter’s genetic mutation. The movie will also connect to the street-level and cosmic corners by introducing Bernthal’s Punisher and pitting Spider-Man against the Hulk and the Hand. Following Brand New Day, Marvel will release Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theatres on July 31, 2026.
