Andreas Schjelderup continued his productive form by putting Norway ahead against England with a 36th-minute cross-shot in their World Cup 2026 quarter-final in Miami on Saturday – but Jude Bellingham scored his fifth goal of the finals to equalise during first-half added time.
Benfica winger Schjelderup, who was the one newcomer in his side’s starting line-up, had set up both of Erling Haaland’s goals in Norway’s 2-1 win over Brazil and seized upon slack defending as Stale Solbakken’s players briefly put themselves on course to meet Argentina or Switzerland in the final four.
“It looks like England went to sleep,” former Three Lions defender Lee Dixon told ITV. “There’s no way he’s aiming top bins there.
“Look at his body shape. What is he trying to do, wrap his foot around it? If he’s gone for the top corner there, he’s the best player in the world.”
World Cup 2026: Bellingham levels for England vs Norway
Bellingham collected Anthony Gordon’s incisive pass and found the far corner of the net from a tight angle inside the box before Harry Kane, who had taken to the turf in an unsuccessful appeal for a foul during the build-up to Norway’s goal, had a finish ruled out for offside.
That ensured the scoreline was level at the break between teams who are yet to enter extra time at the tournament.
“They lost the momentum and now they’ve won it back,” former Ireland captain Roy Keane said of England. “Now they’ve got to finish the job.”
Norway knocked out record five-time champions the Selecao last Sunday, hours before England ousted co-hosts Mexico.
