Norway were left fuming after they believed the ball hit the sky cam above the pitch and directly led to England’s equalising goal at Hard Rock Stadium.
According to footage from U.S. host broadcaster Fox, goalkeeper Orjan Nylan’s goal kick appeared to hit the camera that is suspended on wires above the field during Saturday’s quarter-final in Miami.
The apparent intervention caused a change of possession, with the ball then falling to England midfielder Elliot Anderson. Anderson passed the ball on to Anthony Gordon, who in turn fed Jude Bellingham to score.
The equalising goal came in first-half stoppage time, with Norway coach Stale Solbakken visibly annoyed with referee Clement Turpin at the half-time interval. Nylan also pointed upwards towards the camera in protest, as did Erling Haaland.
“Just before the goal, the ball hits the cable with the camera on it, causing it to change direction and fall shorter than it should have,” Norway assistant coach Kent Bergersen told TV2 at half-time. “The referee should have spotted that.
“There’s nothing we can do about it now. We’ll just have to grit our teeth and get on with it.”

Despite the protestations, a FIFA official has told The Athletic that the ball chip technology — used in every game of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico — did not indicate that the ball touched anything in mid-air and, according to their data, there was no peak on the sensor.
The “outside interference” section of the Laws of the Game indicates that if an “other object” enters the field of play during the match, the referee must:
- stop play (and restart with a dropped ball) only if it interferes with play
- unless the ball is going into the goal and the interference does not prevent a defending player playing the ball; the goal is awarded if the ball enters the goal (even if contact was made with the ball) unless the interference was by the attacking team
- allow play to continue if it does not interfere with play and have it
In this case, if Turpin observed the ball hitting the cable, he should have stopped the play when the ball hit the other object — i.e. the sky cam — and restarted the game with a dropped ball.
A dropped ball sees the ball “dropped at its position when play was stopped, unless it hit a match official or outside agent, in which case it is dropped at the position of the interference/contact.”
The Video Assistant Referee is able to intervene if there is clear and obvious evidence that one of the teams suffered an obvious disadvantage. VAR Jerome Brisard clearly did not feel the incident constituted a clear and obvious error and did not intervene.
Adidas manufactures the balls used in World Cups and since Qatar 2022, a 500Hz inertial measurement unit (IMU) motion sensor has been embedded to track data and enhance the VAR system.
The ‘Connected Ball Technology’ (CBT), as Adidas calls it, is combined with player position data and, through artificial intelligence, they offer real-time information to streamline the semi-automated offside process. By delivering data 500 times a second, the sensor helps make the precise moment a ball was touched clear.
