This Michigan resident bought a private jet membership for $1,400 to find out if it was a legit thing or a scam, and the answer turned out to be a bit more complex than he expected.
While the service was indeed legit and theoretically convenient, the reality was a bit different.
Things didn’t go as planned.
And there was one element of the program that made everything worse.
The reason why these programs rarely work in the real world
People are throwing the word ‘scam’ around a bit too often these days, so we should probably start by defining a scam as something that either doesn’t exist or doesn’t deliver what it promises.
We have to start with the fact that memberships and programs, like the one this YouTuber bought, are not scams.
However, they’re often packed with caveats, ifs, and buts that make conditions and criteria feel impossible to meet.
About a year ago, yours truly bought the Wizz Air ‘All-You-Can-Fly’ pass, and while the program was legit and the fine print was well explained, the reality made the program almost unusable due to limited booking windows and availability.
This YouTuber had a very similar experience with Vaunt.
How Vaunt’s private jet membership works
YouTuber Elijah Lemard spent $1,400 on Vaunt, an ‘unlimited empty-leg private jet’ membership.
The ‘private jet empty leg’ thing is real.
Private jets always need to fly back to base, and they often fly empty, which means that private jet operators don’t mind recouping some of the costs by selling ’empty leg’ tickets at relatively low prices.
In Lemard’s opinion and experience, the first and main problem was the app, which he said crashed constantly.
The second problem was that flights were scarce or nonexistent in the Michigan area and, when available, the app’s UX design made things worse with verification codes that failed or arrived late, server errors, and crashes.
Eventually, months later, he managed to book a Seattle-Phoenix flight but, clearly, he wasn’t particularly happy with the experience.
“If you have four months to spare, no job, and the patience to enter 33 verification codes in one sitting, then sure, you too can fly private. One way,” he said.
