Sunday marks the 57th anniversary of the opening of one of Disney’s classic theme park rides.
Disney has built 12 different amusement parks around the world, including two in each of France, Japan and China, along with six in the United States. This includes Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, which has four parks. And Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, has two parks, including Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park.
And on August 9, 1969, Disneyland Park opened another classic attraction called The Haunted Mansion in New Orleans Square, and it remains operational 57 years later.
Using doom buggies and illusions, The Haunted Mansion is a spooky, slow-moving ride through a haunted estate home. The attraction became popular enough that they opened two more Haunted Mansions, one at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom (1971) and one at Tokyo Disneyland (1983).
The Haunted Mansion went on to win the 1999 Thea Classic Award for most iconic Disneyland attraction. And in 2003, it won the Thea Award for Effective Re-Theming, with a Halloween-themed seasonal overlay called Haunted Mansion Holiday, which featured characters from the film A Nightmare Before Christmas.
The attraction still runs Haunted Mansion Holiday each year, recently closing on August 8, 2026, to begin the transformation, and it is expected to reopen on August 21.
The Haunted Mansion Ranks Among the Fan-Favorite Disneyland Attractions
While The Haunted Mansion isn’t close to the oldest ride at Disneyland, that honor goes to the King Arthur Carousel (1922), it does rank highly among fans.
In fact, one listed The Haunted Mansion as the fourth-best ride at Disneyland, highlighting The Nightmare Before Christmas overlay.
The only other attractions ranked higher on the list were Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (1979), Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (2020) and Pirates of the Caribbean (1967).
