Vin Diesel has become almost synonymous with the Fast & Furious franchise, but there was a time when the actor was looking to establish himself as more than Dominic Toretto.
On Aug. 9, 2002, xXx hit theaters, putting Diesel in the role of Xander Cage, an extreme-sports athlete recruited by the NSA for a dangerous undercover mission. It was an unusual role for a traditional action hero, and exactly the kind of movie that helped define Diesel’s early-2000s career.
Xander Cage Wasn’t a Typical Action Hero
Xander Cage wasn’t introduced as a highly trained government operative. He was an adrenaline junkie who made a name for himself performing outrageous stunts and pushing the limits of what he could do on a skateboard, motorcycle and other extreme-sports equipment.
That made him useful to the NSA.
Samuel L. Jackson’s Augustus Gibbons recruits Cage for a mission involving a dangerous criminal organization, sending him undercover into a world where his unconventional skills become an advantage. The premise essentially allowed xXx to combine the spy movie with the extreme-sports craze that was exploding in popularity at the time.
The Movie Arrived at the Perfect Time for Vin Diesel
Diesel was already gaining momentum.
He had roles in Saving Private Ryan and Pitch Black under his belt, but his career was about to accelerate dramatically. The Fast and the Furious arrived the year before xXx, turning Diesel into a recognizable action star.
Rather than simply making another street-racing movie, xXx gave him a completely different playground.
Cage was cocky, rebellious and physically fearless, but he also had a sense of humor that separated him from the more conventional government agents who populated action movies. It was essentially Diesel playing an action hero who didn’t want to behave like one.
The Stunts Were a Huge Part of the Appeal
xXx leaned heavily into the extreme-sports culture surrounding its protagonist. The movie featured motorcycles, cars, snowboarding, skateboarding and elaborate stunts, creating a visual identity that separated it from more traditional spy franchises.
That helped make the movie feel like a distinctly early-2000s action movie rather than a James Bond imitation. The cast also included Asia Argento as Yelena and Samuel L. Jackson as Agent Augustus Gibbons, with Rob Cohen directing.
xXx earned approximately $141.2 million at the U.S. box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
Critics were less enthusiastic — the film currently holds a 48% Tomatometer score — but audiences have been somewhat kinder, giving it a 58% Popcornmeter score.
Regardless of the reviews, the movie clearly found an audience.
It also spawned a sequel, xXx: State of the Union, although Diesel did not return as Xander Cage for that installment. Instead, Diesel reprised the role in 2017’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage, bringing the extreme-sports spy back nearly 15 years after the original movie.
