Cars have come with some seriously strange factory features over the years, but these might be some of the wildest ever fitted to production vehicles.

From built-in coffee machines to actual ice makers, automakers have occasionally gone far beyond what anyone could reasonably expect from a car.

Some of these features were surprisingly useful, while others feel like they were invented simply because engineers could.

Here are nine cars that prove the factory option list can get absolutely ridiculous.

Honda CR-V had a fold-out picnic table

The first-generation Honda CR-V car had a removable fold-out picnic table built into the floor of its cargo compartment, making it possible to turn the SUV into a surprisingly convincing outdoor dining setup.

Honda says the table sat above a hidden plastic storage area that could even be used for wet clothes or muddy boots.

Fiat 500L’s built-in coffee machine

The Fiat 500L could be ordered with a proper Lavazza espresso machine integrated into the dashboard, making it one of the few cars where stopping for coffee could theoretically mean staying in the car.

Fiat said it was the first standard-production car in the world to offer a fully integrated espresso machine, complete with a dedicated setup for Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules.

Toyota Space Cruiser could make ice

The 1980s Toyota Space Cruiser, known as the Toyota Van in the US, could be fitted with a refrigerator and ice maker that used the vehicle’s air-conditioning refrigerant system to keep things cold.

Toyota’s own history records the refrigerator/warmer with ice maker as one of the available accessories for the second-generation TownAce, while contemporary reports describe the ice trays and tiny refrigerator in the cabin.

Cadillac DeVille could see in the dark

The 2000 Cadillac DeVille could be equipped with night vision, using a thermal-imaging camera mounted in the grille to detect heat signatures beyond the reach of the headlights.

The system then projected a black-and-white thermal image onto a head-up display, giving drivers a bizarre early glimpse of the night-vision technology now associated with far more modern vehicles.

Rolls-Royce Phantom hid an umbrella in the door

The Rolls-Royce Phantom has famously hidden a full-size umbrella inside its rear door, where it can be released at the touch of a button when the weather turns nasty, often needed in London where it’s very popular.

Even the storage compartment was carefully engineered with drainage channels so the wet umbrella could be put straight back inside without soaking the car.

Honda Odyssey came with its own vacuum

Honda decided that a family minivan should be able to clean itself, fitting the Odyssey with a built-in HondaVAC vacuum cleaner on certain trims.

The system had a long hose and attachments stored in the cargo-area side panel, with enough reach to clean virtually the entire cabin.

Pontiac Aztek could turn into a camping machine

The famously divisive Pontiac Aztek could be equipped with a Camping Lifestyle Package that included a tent and a two-person air mattress, effectively turning the crossover into a surprisingly capable camping base.

The tent attached to the rear of the vehicle and could be set up around the open liftgate, giving owners a genuinely bizarre way to extend the Aztek’s living space.

Tesla Model X had Bioweapon Defense Mode

Tesla gave certain Model X vehicles a feature with one of the most dramatic names in the automotive industry: Bioweapon Defense Mode, but along with its batwing doors, it makes it prepared ready for the apocalypse.

It uses a large HEPA filtration system to filter the cabin air, with Tesla offering it as a service-installed upgrade on compatible vehicles.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail had a luxury hosting suite

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail takes ridiculous factory features to another level with a hidden Hosting Suite beneath its rear deck, which opens at the press of a button to reveal a lavish outdoor entertaining setup.

It includes items such as a picnic set, parasol, cocktail tables and a double refrigerator capable of rapidly cooling champagne to exactly six degrees Celsius.
