The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is so wide that Ford had to rely on a legal loophole to get around an unusual US vehicle regulation.

It sounds like the sort of problem you’d expect a monster truck manufacturer to have, not a company building one of America’s most beloved cars.

Yet the GTD’s gigantic bodywork creates a rather strange problem that Ford had to solve before this monster could hit the road.

And once you see just how wide this Mustang is compared to other cars on the road, the whole situation starts to make a lot more sense.

It has widened bodywork for a very specific reason

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD measures 81.7 inches wide, making it roughly six inches wider than a standard Mustang.

That’s largely thanks to its dramatically widened bodywork, which was designed to accommodate massive wheels and tires and give the car the footprint it needs to handle its enormous performance.

Here’s where things get interesting.

US regulations require vehicles measuring 80 inches or more in overall width to have additional clearance and identification lamps.

Those are the familiar marker lights often seen on wide trucks and commercial vehicles.

Suddenly, Ford had a problem: its supercar-hunting Mustang was technically wide enough to fall into that category.

Ford’s loophole was based on the GTD’s vehicle classification.

The rules apply to vehicles classified as multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks and buses, but the Mustang GTD is classified as a passenger car.

That distinction means Ford could build an 81.7-inch-wide Mustang without having to bolt the same clearance lamps you’d expect to see on a wide pickup truck.

In other words, the GTD is wide enough to trigger the measurement, but its classification keeps it outside the regulation.

Ford had much bigger ambitions for the Mustang GTD

Developed with the Mustang GT3 race car as inspiration, it features an inboard rear suspension, Multimatic adaptive spool-valve dampers, active aerodynamics and carbon-ceramic brakes.

Its carbon-fiber body panels and carbon-fiber driveshaft also help keep weight under control.

Then there’s the engine.

A supercharged 5.2-liter V8 produces a monstrous 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sending power to the rear wheels.

The result is a claimed 202 mph top speed, while independent testing has recorded a 0-60 mph sprint in around 2.8 seconds.

Ford also famously set a 6:52.072 Nürburgring lap, putting the GTD firmly into supercar territory.

Naturally, this level of engineering doesn’t come cheap.

The 2025 Mustang GTD started at almost $320,000, before options.

So yes, Ford’s fastest Mustang ever is wide enough to create a regulatory headache.

But thanks to a clever classification loophole, the GTD gets to keep its enormous stance without dressing up like a truck.

And frankly, with 815 horsepower under the hood, it already has more than enough attitude.
