This Nevada YouTuber has been driving his Tesla Model X for 100,000 miles over five years, which means he’s now ready to share his verdict.
The Model X, now discontinued, was Tesla’s first SUV, even though it wasn’t necessarily the most successful as that title belongs to the Model Y.
Still, the Tesla Model X was a solid choice.
But, in this YouTuber’s view, a few things didn’t really work.
Let’s start with the good things about his Tesla
Will Prowse, the Nevada Tesla owner behind the DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse YouTube channel, has owned his Tesla Model X for about 100,000 miles and five years, and boy did he have something to say about it.
Let’s start with the good stuff and the positives.
We should probably preface this by saying that this is a 2021 Tesla Model X, but it’s the post-redesign variant.
That’s important because in late 2021, Tesla’s update changed everything.
The Plaid tri-motor powertrain was introduced, along with a new chassis, improved suspension, and a redesigned cabin with a landscape-oriented touchscreen.
The fact his car featured a landscape-oriented touchscreen confirms this is a post-redesign model, and this detail will become significant later.
But, for now, we can focus on the first and main pro: the battery and powertrain.
Over 100,000 miles, he has performed virtually no maintenance beyond filling wiper fluid, and the battery only lost just over 20 percent of its capacity, which is not bad at all.
“The degradation is 20.65 percent. When I first bought the car, I could charge to 70 or 80 percent. Now, I have to charge to 100 percent to get that same capacity,” he noted.
Also, he said that the car features the old Autopilot system rather than the new FSD (Full Self-Driving) system, which is less sophisticated but, crucially, it’s free for him, which is nice.
He actually pointed out that the free Autopilot is the main reason he’s keeping the car, mainly because driving it without really driving it is a huge perk for his road trips across Nevada and the rest of the country.
But now there’s the bad stuff.
DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse
The build quality is sub-par, in his view
Even though this is the post-redesign version, Prowse thinks it’s still pretty bad as far build quality goes.
The YouTuber noticed massive panel gaps and he also had a problem with the paintwork.
It’s a long list.
In addition to the massive panel gaps – which in his view make it look like some of the parts were ‘thrown together’ – the paint on the vehicle’s mirrors was peeing off and the plastic trim has become misaligned.
This means that, at least in his experience, the 2021 redesign wasn’t enough to fix those problems.
Still, the Model X – as we know – is capable of incredible longevity.
We wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up keeping it for five more years and 100,000 more miles.
