The BMW M5 once set an incredible Guinness World Record after drifting non-stop for about eight hours.

To be exact, the M5 covered 232.5 miles.

That’s basically the same as drifting from Los Angeles to San Diego and back.

The record itself was crazy, but it’s how they did it that was even wilder.

Why BMW wanted to set this Guinness World Record

There are several reasons why the German manufacturers did this.

For starters, they wanted to showcase the performance and durability of the M5, which is fair enough – that’s basically marketing 101.

But, obviously, ego was involved as they also wanted to reclaim the crown from Toyota.

In 2013, a stock M5 had set a world record after drifting for 51.3 miles.

But just a few years later, Toyota stole the title when a driver drifted a GT86 for 102.5 miles.

BMW wanted the title again, and they wanted to be sure, which is why they did 232.5 miles.

So far, so crazy.

But what’s even crazier is how they managed the inevitable fuel problem.

How they refueled the car while it was drifting

Obviously, you can’t drift for 232.5 miles without refueling, which leads us to the craziest part of the experiment.

During the run, a second BMW M5 drifted alongside the main car, allowing a passenger to lean out the rear window and connect a custom fuel hose five separate times while both cars were sliding.

After solving the fuel problem, driver Johan Schwartz drifted the M5 for 232.5 miles (374.2 km) continuously over 8 hours.

This also allowed the German automaker to set a second record because the two vehicles also completed a 79.26 km (49.25 mi) twin drift.

What’s interesting is that BMW actually ‘only’ wanted to complete 549 laps, because they did the math and figured that would be enough to beat Toyota’s record by a comfortable margin – but they ended up doing 2,325 laps.

But hey, when you’re on a roll, you’re on a roll.
