Manchester City moved three points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League by overcoming a Sunderland side who equalised twice as part of a Brian Brobbey hat-trick at the Etihad Stadium.
Enzo Fernandez curled in a free-kick for the £125 million signing’s first City goal before Brobbey struck the first of two first-half levellers, also replying to Rayan Cherki’s finish.

Antoine Semenyo swept in to put Enzo Maresca’s side 3-2 ahead and Brobbey shot against the crossbar shortly before the break, only for Semenyo to score again and the Netherlands forward to complete his treble.

Erling Haaland then ended his drought against Sunderland, scoring against the only team he had failed to net against in the Premier League in his third game against the Black Cats as the hosts entered the international break with a cushion at the summit.

Phil Foden’s red card in that game meant the playmaker was replaced by winger Iliman Ndiaye. Wideman Jeremy Doku featured in a Premier League squad for the first time this season following injury, starting on the bench.

Sunderland made five changes to their starting side from the win over AZ, bringing in Meunier, Dayann Methalie, Dan Ballard, Nilson Angulo and Brobbey.
Left-back Reinildo was banned, with France Under-21 international Methalie making his first Premier League start. Romaine Mundle (knee) and Habib Diarra (hamstring) were sidelined.
