Gundam fans have spent months waiting for news about the Sydney Sweeney live-action film. Before that project arrives, however, the franchise hands them a different reason to get excited. A 40th anniversary livestream dedicated to video games lands around the end of October 2026, giving fans roughly one month to prepare.
Gundam officially announces 40th Anniversary broadcast for October
The announcement came through Gundam Perfect Games on X (formerly Twitter), though specifics remain limited. “Gundam Games 40th Anniversary Live Stream Confirmed,” reads the post, translated from Japanese.
“To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Gundam games, a livestream has been confirmed! We plan to hold the stream around the end of October 2026. Please stay tuned for further details!” No exact release date has been given, but “around the end of October” narrows the window considerably.
The livestream will focus specifically on video games rather than the franchise’s broader 50th anniversary, which will happen in a few years. With Gundam: Rogue Orbit launching in 2027, fans can reasonably expect more information on that title during the broadcast.
The 40th anniversary celebrations were originally slated to include giveaways at Tokyo Game Show this year, but those were canceled shortly before the event. Some giveaways are still underway through online entries, though only fans in Japan can participate at this time.
Fans have been wondering which game actually will mark the start of the 40th anniversary. As many pointed out on X, at least one game was released in 1983. Mobile Suit Z Gundam: Hot Scramble came out in August 1986 for the Famicom, making it the likely candidate to be considered the first, despite the fact that Arcadia Mobile Suit Gundam, released in 1983, is widely regarded as the first-ever home console Gundam game (via ScreenRant).
The anniversary stream lands as the franchise builds momentum on multiple fronts. The live-action Gundam film, which wrapped filming at the end of July, features Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo.
