Alejandro G. Iñárritu has shared the inspiration behind his film Digger’s original title. The filmmaker’s new satirical black comedy features an ensemble cast led by Tom Cruise.
The title of Iñárritu’s Digger comes from the name of Tom Cruise’s character in the movie, Digger Rockwell. However, the movie was originally intended to be called “Blah, Blah, Blah.” The director has recently addressed the meaning behind this bizarre title and why it was fitting for the movie’s thematic tone.
“It was a reference to this incredible, terrible, terrifying weapon that we as humans have, which is the tongue,” Iñárritu told IndieWire ahead of Digger’s Los Angeles premiere. He added, “It can change your perception of the reality that your body is experiencing. It can make you believe in something that you don’t see.”

Digger stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a wealthy oil tycoon who unleashes havoc on the natural world before embarking on a frantic mission to prove that he can save the world himself. The movie is a satirical reflection on corporate greed, climate change, and the global influence of media.
During his interview with IndieWire, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu expounded, “We are living in a satire. The more we stretched our imagination, reality was chasing and catching us. It was crazy. Now I think the tone of the film feels almost realistic because if you turn on the TV, this is what is going on. The people in power are trying to convince all of us that everything is fine, and people want to buy that, and that’s the power of someone like Digger.”
