Jessica Chastain, the star of Other Mommy, revealed why the movie went with its title. Some online discussions suggested that “Other Mother” could have been an alternative, or even a better, title for the movie.
Chastain explained to fans why “Other Mommy” was a more appropriate title for the project. Speaking with AP Entertainment, she revealed, “The movie takes place from the perspective of an eight-year-old girl, and she doesn’t call her mother ‘mother.’ It’s not like a formal relationship. She calls her ‘Mommy.’”
She also explained that the source material, the novel Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman, was inspired by an incident involving the author’s brother. After being tucked into bed, Malerman’s niece reportedly said, “Good night, other mommy,” though she was not referring to anyone in particular. The book is narrated from the point of view of its eight-year-old protagonist, and this perspective also influenced the movie’s title. Hence, the filmmakers chose to favor “mommy” over “mother.”
What is Jessica Chastain’s Other Mommy about?
Other Mommy is a supernatural psychological horror movie. It is directed by Rob Savage, whose previous works include movies like Host, Dashcam, and The Boogeyman. The movie follows a paranormal entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother. She proceeds to harass her family and haunt her home. The title choice thus captures the child’s viewpoint and her bond with the supernatural entity.
The movie stars Jessica Chastain as both the mother and the entity that takes her form. Along with the It: Chapter Two alum, the movie also stars Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, Rosie Anne O’Gorman, and Arabella Olivia Clark. James Wan produces the movie through his company, Blumhouse–Atomic Monster. Nathan Elston wrote the screenplay while Universal Pictures distributed it.
Other Mommy is scheduled to hit the theatres on October 9, 2026.
