“Ali G: Who Iz I?”

A Republican leader in Texas has threatened to sue Sacha Baron Cohen, claiming that he was misled into appearing in the comedian’s new film, Ali G: Who Iz I?

Michael Aboud, chair of the El Paso County Republican Party, said he believed he was participating in a documentary about immigration and the US-Mexico border rather than a satirical comedy.

He accused Cohen and his production team of deceiving participants for their own benefit.

“They claimed that this would be a documentary about the illegals crossing the border. Then they said they were adding in this self-defence guy from Israel,” Aboud told the Guardian.

He described the film’s crew as a “bunch of liars who deceive people to benefit themselves”. “It is my opinion that Cohen is a pervert,” he said.

In the film, Aboud is filmed taking part in a training session led by Cohen in character as Colonel Erran Morad, a fictional former Mossad counterterrorism expert who also appeared in the comedian’s 2018 series Who Is America?

Morad goes on to teach a series of bizarre self-defence techniques, including wearing protective plastic buttocks over their clothes.

The session becomes a staged operation where Morad recruits Aboud and fellow participant Joshua Loudermilk, a former preacher and aspiring actor, to stop the baby of a fictional South American drug kingpin from being born on US soil.

In a later scene, Aboud drops the baby, dangling from a drone at considerable height, to prevent it from touching US soil.

Aboud, a businessman in El Paso, told the El Paso Times he had received an email from a production company in the summer of 2025 inviting him to participate in a gathering about immigration and its impact on local communities.

He said he travelled to California believing he was attending a serious discussion about the US-Mexico border, only for the event to take an increasingly bizarre turn.

“The emails seemed official,” Aboud said. “It was a small documentary about the border.”

Aboud said he refused to take part in further filming after the initial session, and in particular objected to a scene involving a man in mariachi attire. “They kind of paint Hispanics in a very bad light,” he said. “I didn’t find it funny.”

“I never signed anything agreeing to do a movie. They did not get my permission for anything,” he added, saying he was “seriously thinking about” legal action.

The Independent contacted Cohen’s representatives for comment, but didn’t receive an immediate response.

Ali G: Who Iz I? marks the return of Cohen’s best-known comedy character, more than two decades after the release of Ali G Indahouse in 2002.

The new film follows the tracksuit-wearing, gold-chain-loving wannabe gangster from Staines as he seeks to revive his career in America after discovering his long-term girlfriend Julie is pregnant.

The movie has faced calls for a boycott, with campaign group NewsCord accusing Cohen of using satire as “a cover for enforcing racist stereotypes”, arguing that Ali G’s imitation of Black British and Jamaican culture is an outdated and offensive caricature.

The Independent’s Louis Chilton described the film as “appalling”.

“Against the odds, Who Iz I? shows that Baron Cohen still has the power to shock. But I’m not sure what else this film has going for it. It is a film that betrays no real humanity, that sees the world as being formed of two camps: people to mock and people to dupe,” he wrote in his review.

Responding to the controversy surrounding Ali G, Cohen defended his character in an essay for Time magazine, claiming that he had always intended his characters and comedy to “expose prejudice, bias and stupidity, though I realise not everyone sees them that way”.

“Ali G is a white imbecile – a delusional cultural appropriator – who steals the fashion and lyrics from his favorite gangsta rap and dancehall idols, from Compton to Kingston,” he wrote in the piece published on Tuesday.
