The NBA revealed finalists for its regular-season awards during the NBC broadcast of Sunday night’s first-round playoff game between the Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.
The league split the announcements between pregame and halftime, with the MVP, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year finalist reveals all saved for the break. Here’s a look at the finalists:
Clutch Player of the Year
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City
The reigning MVP led the NBA with 175 points in clutch time — a game’s final five minutes in regulation/overtime when the score is within five points. SGA’s total was nine more than second-place Murray. The Thunder had a 20-7 clutch-time record when SGA played, including a plus-minus of plus-93 in such situations, according to NBA.com.
Jamal Murray, Denver
Murray scored 166 clutch-time points while shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 44.1 percent on 3s. The Nuggets finished fifth in clutch-time offensive efficiency.
Anthony Edwards, Minnesota
You might be wondering how Edwards, who recently had his appeal for the league’s 65-game rule denied, qualified for this award. The answer is two-pronged: 1) The rule doesn’t apply to Clutch Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year; and 2) Edwards finished sixth in clutch-time points (135) on 56.5 percent shooting.
Defensive Player of the Year
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio
Wemby led the NBA in blocks for the third time in three NBA seasons as San Antonio finished third in defense. In the regular season, the Spurs’ defensive efficiency swung by over 10 points based on Wemby’s minutes.
Ausar Thompson, Detroit
Thompson contributed to the league’s second-best defense by leading all players in steals per game (2.0). He joins M.L. Carr (1978-79) as the only players in Pistons history to lead the NBA in swipes.
Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City
Holmgren is the rim protector for the NBA’s best defense, which ranked first in defensive rating for the second consecutive season. The Thunder’s defense improved by 5.6 points when Holmgren stepped onto the court.
Most Improved Player
Deni Avdija, Portland
Avdija made an All-Star leap by averaging career-highs in points (24.2) and assists (6.7). He recorded more triple-doubles this regular season (three) than his first 359 NBA games combined (two).
Jalen Duren, Detroit
Duren was a vital part of Detroit securing its first No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference since the 2006-07 season. Alongside Cade Cunningham, he rounded out the Pistons’ first All-Star duo in almost two decades.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Atlanta
After a sign-and-trade sent him to the Hawks this summer, Alexander-Walker bloomed into one of the NBA’s best stories this season. He averaged a career-high 20.8 points on the way to 10 30-point games, doubling his total from his first six years in the league.
Sixth Man of the Year
Keldon Johnson, San Antonio
Johnson didn’t start a single game all regular season, but his impact was felt as the Spurs marched their way to 62 wins. He finished second among reserves in total points (1,081) while being the NBA’s only player to appear in all 82 games without starting.
Jaime Jaquez Jr., Miami
Jaquez was a huge reason for Miami leading the NBA in pace. He averaged career-highs in points (15.4), rebounds (5.0) and assists per game (4.7) while shooting a career-best 50.7 percent from the field. Miami went 13-5 when he had at least seven assists.
Tim Hardaway Jr., Denver
The 13-year NBA veteran shot a career-best 40.7 percent on 3s. The Nuggets went 12-5 when he scored at least 20 points in the regular season.
Most Valuable Player
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City
SGA could become the league’s first guard to win consecutive MVPs since Steph Curry went back-to-back in 2015 and 2016. This season, he became the eighth player to average 30 points in four separate seasons, joining Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, Jerry West and Oscar Robertson as the only guards to do so.
Nikola Jokić, Denver
With a fourth MVP award, the Joker would join Jordan, LeBron James, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only four-time winners in league history. He became only the third player in NBA history to average a triple-double for a full season (Robertson, Russell Westbrook) last year — then he did it again this season.
Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio
The third-year sensation could join Naismith Hall of Famers Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the only players in franchise history to win MVP. The Spurs’ 62 regular-season wins were their most in a decade.

Coach of the Year
J.B. Bickerstaff, Detroit
Bickerstaff continued his turnaround of the Pistons, whose 60 wins marked their third-most in team history. The Pistons are hoping to make their first NBA Finals run since 2004.
Mitch Johnson, San Antonio
Johnson earned his finalist spot by leading the Spurs to their first playoff berth since 2019. It’s easy to credit Wemby’s presence, but the Spurs went 12-6 in games their franchise player missed.
Joe Mazzulla, Boston
Without Jayson Tatum for most of the season, Mazzulla led Boston to the East’s No. 2 seed in what many expected to be a down year for Boston. Now, the Celtics are eyeing their second title in three years.
Rookie of the Year
Cooper Flagg, Dallas
Flagg joined Jordan as the only rookies since 1973-74 to lead their teams in total points, rebounds, assists and steals. Although the Mavericks had their worst season in almost a decade, they clearly found their building block for the future.
Kon Knueppel, Charlotte
The Hornets’ surprise run to the NBA Play-In Tournament was influenced by Knueppel’s long-range accuracy. He became the first rookie in league history to lead all players in made 3-pointers (273).
V.J. Edgecombe, Philadelphia
The promising guard had his work cut out for him this year, given the cases made by Flagg and Knueppel, but Edgecombe proved pivotal to the 76ers making a playoff run despite missing Joel Embiid and Paul George for long stretches of the season.
