Milly Alcock’s Supergirl touches down in theaters this week, but James Gunn already teased that won’t be the last time. The DC Studios chief used the film’s world premiere to confirm that Kara Zor-El won’t fade into the background.
James Gunn teases Supergirl’s major role in Man of Tomorrow
Gunn told ExtraTV that Alcock is currently balancing press duties and filming for Man of Tomorrow while traveling between continents. This demanding schedule highlights the significance of her character. “Milly’s got a big role in that one,” he said. “I feel sorry for her because she’s flying around the world, coming to set, shooting with me, coming back, having them do more press, flying back, it’s hard.”
The filmmaker framed the upcoming clash between the two Kryptonians as the real payoff for what begins in Supergirl. Their fractured dynamic “is a big part of this movie and then an even bigger part of Man of Tomorrow, which we’re filming now.”
That fracture stems from wounds Superman never had to endure. Gunn described an antihero carrying invisible scars. “She’s had a very, very, very difficult life… She’s damaged because of it, and she’s not really ready to accept the suit in a way that Superman was.”
Milly Alcock shaped her performance without using Clark Kent as a crutch. She explained that developing Kara independently made every scene she shared with David Corenswet spark with energy. The distance between them isn’t rebellion for its own sake — it’s the logical result of two people who processed the same catastrophe under wildly different conditions.
“She desires his freedom within himself that she doesn’t have. She really struggles to be who she is, and I think she sees that Clark can move through the world being exactly who he is without being interfered [with] by his own personal demons, and I think she’s jealous of that.”
Supergirl is scheduled to premiere on June 26.
