Terence Crawford was quick to offer his verdict on Jaron Ennis’ win over Zander Zayas, and now the new unified super-welterweight world champion has responded.
‘Boots’ produced a thrilling display to stop Zayas inside seven rounds, showcasing the skill set that gives him an argument as one of the best fighters in the world. There was, however, a sticky moment in the third, when his willingness to trade saw him stunned by Zayas – though he claimed post-fight that he wasn’t hurt at any stage.
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani show, Ennis was asked about Crawford’s reaction to his win, specifically the retired star saying he was ‘ten steps ahead of him’ skill-wise.
“I don’t care. None of that stuff bothers me.
On a potential fight with Crawford, ‘Boots’ remains realistic.
“As of right now, he’s retired. What did he say? He said he’s enjoying his retirement, right? You could say [it’s a big money fight] but there’s other big fights out here for sure, too, though. I don’t consider him anything. I don’t even care. I don’t pay him, or none of these people, no mind.”
Crawford has also praised Ennis and wished him continued success, though warned him that the likes of Sebastian Fundora and Vergil Ortiz – the two big super-welterweight names he is targeting next – will provide much tougher tests than Zayas did.
Ennis has named Fundora, standing 6 feet 5½ inches tall, as his ideal target, looking to add the WBC belt to the WBA and WBO belts he won from Zayas.
