You’d never be able to tell by looking at it now, but this yellow Porsche 911 993 actually spent years at the bottom of a river in Italy.
When the car was pulled from the bottom of the river, it weighed an extra 2,400 pounds (1,100kg) due to all the silt and mud inside.
That’s basically the same weight as parking another car on top of it.
Years later, the yellow Porsche was fully restored and, as you can see, you’d never guess what happened to it.
The car remained trapped at the bottom of the river for four and a half years
The car’s nightmare began on a rainy evening in February 2014 in a relatively small town near Florence, Italy.
The owner lost control of the Summer Yellow Porsche 911, which ended up in a river.
The river in question isn’t particularly deep or large – and I know that because it’s in this author’s hometown – but that’s where the story gets even crazier.
And we probably need a bit of context.
The river in Florence is called the Arno, and it’s only the eighth largest in Italy.
In Europe as a whole, it ranks well outside the top 100 longest rivers.
And the river in which the Porsche sank is a tributary of the Arno – so basically a small tributary of a river that’s already minor to begin with.
364 days a year, this river is basically the equivalent of a shallow creek.
So you need a spectacular amount of bad luck for this river to be flowing rapidly and flood enough to swallow a Porsche.
But then again, it’s all a matter of perspective.
Unlucky for the car, but lucky for the driver, because he managed to escape the vehicle unscathed.
Sadly, the Porsche was dragged away by the current and submerged.
He tried everything he could to save it, but that was impossible, and that’s how it ended up trapped at the bottom of the river for four and a half years.
This Porsche 911 993 is absolutely perfect now
The recovery process alone was grueling.
After paying outstanding taxes and ownership fees as if the car had been on the road the entire time, the new owner spent a full day manually shoveling a ton of river mud out of the interior.
Remarkably, once the car was stripped to bare metal, the owner and his team discovered that the chassis had suffered no structural damage, which sounds like a miracle.
The silt, ironically, had acted as a protective seal, preventing oxygen from causing catastrophic corrosion.
The owner and his team painstakingly rebuilt the engine, salvaging original components like the pistons and crankshaft wherever possible, before focusing on the body.
On July 25, 2023, nearly 10 years after the accident, the Porsche 911 993 finally roared back to life.
The owner has been documenting the ‘life’ of the yellow Porsche on his Instagram account, which bears the same name as the car: LimoncellaProjekt.
The ‘k’ in the word ‘project’ is just because the owner is using the German word for it, this being a German car.
And as for ‘Limoncella,’ it’s a clever play on words referencing the car’s color and Limoncello, an Italian lemon liqueur.
The result? Absolute perfection.
