Robert De Niro and Gene Hackman are two of the most iconic Hollywood actors we have ever seen, but both may have made a mistake turning down an iconic movie role over 35 years ago.
On February 14, 1991, The Silence of the Lambs released in theaters, becoming one of the best movies of all time. The film stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, who is now considered among the best villains of all time.
The film follows Clarice, a young FBI cadet, who enlists the help of cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter to track down Buffalo Bill, a madman who skins his victims.
And Hopkins’ performance as Hannibal Lecter is often considered one of the best of all time, becoming the creepy, manipulative serial killer we all know today. In fact, he won th 1992 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter.
But director Jonathan Demme considered several high-profile actors for the role of Hannibal Lecter before ultimately casting Anthony Hopkins. That list included De Niro, who took too long to decide whether to accept the role, and Hackman, whose daughter reportedly convinced him to pass because of the disturbing nature of the character.
Hannibal Lecter is Widely Considered Among the Best Villains Ever
While The Silence of the Lambs is considered Hannibal Lecter’s greatest movie, it was not the characters first. In fact, Hannibal Lecter first appeared in 1986’s Manhunter, which spelled his name Lecktor.
But it was Hopkins’ portrayal of the character that really made Hannibal Lecter iconic, appearing in two movies, Hannibal and Red Dragon, in the 2000s. Even in 2013, Hannibal Lecter got his own show called Hannibal, which starred Mads Mikkelsen as the serial killer.
Hannibal Lecter became such an iconic character that both Collider and the American Film Institute ranked him as the greatest movie villain of all time, beating out the likes of Anthony Perkins’ Norman Bates in Psycho (1960), Darth Vader in the Star Wars series and The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz (1939).
