Luckily, after years of post-launch support, one of gaming’s most controversial releases is now beloved by fans, with many calling it one of the biggest redemption arcs in video games, and it is still seeing updates to this day.
Today, August 9, 2026, is the 10th anniversary of the release of No Man’s Sky on the PlayStation 4. This action-adventure sci-fi survival game was promised by the developers to have an expansive universe full of unique planets and deep survival mechanics. That was not the case when early copies of the game were leaked before the release date, and fans discovered a lot of what had been promised was not in the game.
No Man’s Sky was also a victim of “overhype” in the industry, with an extensive marketing campaign and several video game analysts stating they expected the game to be one of the all-time great sci-fi exploration games.
Cyberpunk 2077, which originally released in 2020, was also a victim of a game being overly ambitious and marketing blitzes portraying the game differently than the final product.
According to Metacritic, the original release of No Man’s Sky is sitting at a 71 metascore. The user score is even lower, at 5.6. Critics and fans were highly critical of the game’s interface, repetition, ending, exploration, and lack of quality-of-life features. Some critics praised the game’s scope, and No Man’s Sky became a conversation piece about how to approach procedurally generated content in video games.
Since its initial release, No Man’s Sky has been ported to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Hello Games also committed to delivering several major free content updates to the game, with the game still receiving support in 2026; the latest patch, called Swarm, was released in May and was made free to all players.
With the consistent addition of free updates that added not just new areas or levels but entirely new mechanics, No Man’s Sky has since turned from being a widely criticized product to being the standard for how to fix its problems for fans.
Some of those additions include base-building, virtual reality support, vehicles, crossplay, space fleets, and much more.
In 2026, No Man’s Sky is now an example of passionate love from developers and fans, and seems to be going as strong as ever, with even more content planned down the road.
