On this day, 48 years ago, a legendary disco group released one of their most popular albums, which happened to feature their best-selling song of all time.
Chic, founded in 1927 by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, became one of the more iconic disco groups during the 1970s. The group created some of the biggest disco and funk hits we still love today, including I Want Your Love (1978), Everybody Dance (1977) and Good Times (1979), which hit No. 1 on the U.S. charts.
And on August 11, 1978, Chic released their second studio album called C’est Chic, which is widely considered the group’s best album.
The album features eight songs, including three singles, and each song was written by Edwards and Rodgers. And the European version of the album was originally called Tres Chic, which included two extra songs.
The album became certified platinum, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. It also topped the U.S. R&B albums charts for 11 weeks, becoming the 1979 Billboard No. 1 Album of the Year.
C’est Chic Also Featured the No. 1 Hit Single Le Freak
While C’est Chic featured some of Chic’s most iconic songs, it also contained their best-selling single Le Freak. The song would hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, spending five weeks at the top. It would also hit No. 1 on the U.S. Hot Soul/R&B songs and peaked at No. 7 in the UK.
Le Freak would go on to sell over seven million copies worldwide, becoming the top-selling single by Atlantic Records at the time, along with one of the “best-selling singles of all time.”
This would top Chic’s next two best-selling singles, including Good Times, which sold over five million copies, and Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah), selling over one million.
