Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth, has announced his eighth studio album, Just Beyond Endless Mountain, out October 9th via ANTI-. To stir anticipation, the folk singer-songwriter has shared the project’s lead single, “Deliver Me from Trying.” Stream it below.
Following Matsson’s return to hisnative Dalarna in central Sweden a few years ago,Just Beyond Endless Mountain draws from the traditional music he grew up with. In a departure from the American folk tradition to which his name is typically attached, its 11 songs draw from Swedish polksas andother sounds that raised him.

“I just wasn’t educated enough in the folk music tradition,” Matsson shared in a statement. “I knew so little about it. Somewhere along the way, I’d developed this immature aversion to the whole cultural inheritance I grew up with. But now I live here again. I’ve read an incredible amount — not just about the music, but about how people actually lived in the old days. I think that’s part of why this record feels more like me than anything I’ve made before. This album really comes from somewhere.”

Just Beyond Endless Mountain also emerged from a period of loss. Matsson’s father died in 2024 after living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years, which played a key role in steering his songwriting.
“The album started out in such a dark place,” he said. “But my dad wouldn’t have wanted me walking around feeling sorry for myself. He’s always been the one who believed in me. I figured, okay, now I’m going to make something I really mean — for [my father’s] sake.”
Recorded largely at Matsson’s home studio, the album features singer Sofia HK and drummer Björn Sima, while Martin Hederos contributed the majority of its fiddle parts and piano overdubs. CJ Camerieri, who has worked with Bon Iver and Paul Simon, also supplied horn arrangements. Matsson otherwise handled most of the recording and mixing himself, occasionally running tracks through aging reel-to-reel machines to deliberately introduce imperfections into the finished recordings.
“Deliver Me from Trying” reveals a message of learning to let go, as Matsson sings: “You never see what’s coming/ You get up when you fall/ And only if your song holds a weary lie/ Then deliver me from trying.”
“Colors,” the first single fromJust Beyond Endless Mountain, was released in May. The project marks the first Tallest Man on Earth album since 2023’s Henry St.
Matsson will resume his tour in Europe later this month,with the United States leg scheduled to commence in October.
